i have been thinking a lot about doing a blog over the past few months, finally I got up the courage to do it, and this will be the first post.
I will be writing a lot about my hobby and secondary passion, namely , kiting and other things “windy”. Indeed since a young man in the Dominica West Indies island I have been obsessed with kites. We used palm leaf ribs, dried in the tropical sun and tissue paper we usually sneaked from our mothers to make small [one foot square] diamond kites and fly them from the balcony over the street.
While on business travel in Mexico in the late 1990’s I was exposed to a “sports kite” which had two control lines and was steerable. I later purchased such a kite while in Galveston Texas on vacation. This was the smallest cheapest little dual line kite that the kite shop had to offer, I also bought a single line diamond kite with the image of a parrot appliqued to it’s sail, which were carried back to Arizona. Winds being “willy – nilly” and very uncertain in Arizona i was very frustrated with the tiny two line kite, and no person told me about using a stake to set up the kite for launching etc when it was purchased. The “mosquito on speed” as i called it was left in the motorhome with the fishing and hiking gear as entertainment item. It was not until later in Texas that the kites came out again.
While talking with a co-worker in Texas the subject came around to the kites and how much fun they were, the co-worker then mentioned the Zilker Park kite fest which was coming up in Austin and we decided to take it in. Archie, son Eric and I spent the day being amazed by large kites as big as football fields, sport kite teams flying ballet routines to music, and a couple of guys fooling around with some weird as heck four line kites they called a “rev” . I sat and watched Tye and Troy for it seemed forever, my butt went numb sitting on the the turf. That was all it took,m I inquired as to the type, style, cost, availability of these strange kites and was immediately hooked. These kites had three dimensional control, they could fly backwards as easy as forwards, they could hover in mid flight anywhere in the sky, absolutely amazing!!! I WAS HOOKED!!
I saved up the extra cash and bought the entry level model, soon I was tearing up the air with my own “rev”, and was going to every kite festival that was nearby.
And that is the rest of the story— why I have the nickname—“wickedrevs”– cause they are wicked crazy maneuvering kites and I totally enjoy flying them. I now own several Revs and a few other quad line kites.
I will continue to “put down in words” my past and present experiences with kites and the hobby in general; as well as add thoughts /chats / rants as they come to mind.
