Missing my “String Time”

I run back through some pics of past kite times, finding images of days on the beach and noticing that the breeze here today is PERFECT for an afternoon kite fly.

But. I am without wheels temporarily, so there is no way to grab my kite bags,  chair, and cooler to head to the “kite spot” here in the city of trees!  There are only two places usable for kite flying, one when wind is out of north or west, the other when out of south, not too much from east.  Thankfully, our winds very rarely do the due easterly thing very often.

Non-stringy flying objects

The south “air park” is near the community pool, and a retention pond whose surface is ployed by other flying creatures not constructed of nylon and carbon fiber! The geese have an affinity for this pool, and we sometimes share the airspace. I have flown several times here, and the kids and Moms all seem to enjoy the “air show” The Ron Gibian diamond 65 is a favorite design of mine and a sure crowd pleaser.

The other field or the “north” field is on the grounds of the hospital, it is surrounded by an exercise walkway and only has recently planted small trees as obstructions. My Dad and I were htere last year on July 4th, just enjoying some sun and fun following the parade, when a policeman showed up, said we were “trespassing” and someone had called to have us removed. He didn’t think there was any validity in it, but he had no recourse. So… we packed the bags and skedaddled! I put a call into the hospital Administrator and asked for permission to enjoy my “exercise” in the designated walkway and grass area. she certainly had no hesitation to approve. I had been flying here from time to time for 4 years with no repercussions. Now I will be returning again, when the winds are with me, and it ever stops raining around here! This summer has been wetter than the last three for certain.

A man with his Rev

My favorite kites to fly are Revolutions, although I also own several other quadline kite models. The Rev was introduced to me in 2000 at Zilker Park Festival, Austin, TX and I was hooked for life. I have a modest collection, from the Indoor to the Supersonic, to the Blast, a power wing extraordinaire! My flying “handle” is “wickedrevs”— because of my aggressive flying style.

As for single liners, my best was “Cletus the Crawfish” I inherited it from the widow of my friend Guy. I no longer own that kite, but would like to someday buy it back from my pal who bought it when I became too ill to fly “big stuff”. One can dream, right?
