A bio about my kite affliction and how i got started….
Dano first started making kites in the Caribbean Islands as a teen using coconut palm fronds, bits of tissue paper, and scavenged twine, even built a hang glider which flew for a short distance!!
Many years later he was introduced to sport kites in the late 1990’s, moved to Texas and attended Zilker Park Kite Fest in Austin. Watching Tye and Troy at Zilker Park sparked what he casually but seriously calls an addiction with Quad line kites. Attending a AKA competition in Rockport in 2000 he fell in love with the community, it’s beaches and breezes, so he moved there two weeks later, been flying kites there for eleven years now! Dano also enjoys the power and pull of traction kites, and kite All Terrain Boarding is an all-time favorite pastime.
He and his daughter owned and operated a kite shop in downtown Rockport until Nicole left to attend college. He has produced several local kite festivals and is an active member in the Coastal Bend Skypirates kite flyers group. The Skypirates host both the Audrey’s Day Down Syndrome kite fly each June, and the Great Texas Kite Club Fun Fly each December. He enjoys taking photos and videos of kite events and sharing with others via the Coastal Bend Skypirates websites.
Dano enjoys the challenges of “appliqué” and sews mostly feather banners, tube tails, and kite line laundry. His interest for the future is to explore more of the art of building kites, and to actively promote kite festivals in the Coastal Bend area.
