There was an event last March where a bunch of us Coastal Bend kite flyers gathered and I saw a windsock that piqued my interest. So I took a quick camera shot, saying “i think I can make that”. Well later on I found another pic of similar design, saved that one too.
So as weather turned more tolerable I spent some “serious time” at my workstation, getting some things done for folks, and digging around in bins and boxes of material I have been “hoarding” for years. I see a couple colors that think would make a good fit for my “project” so I start with a “paper blueprint” and cutting some ripstop.
This was the first elements , eight in all. Then they were joined to a “body”, it had some strange eyes on it and there was a certain amount of aeronautics engineering to be calculated.

Then there are more pieces and parts that get cut, sewn, assembled and fitted, sewn together.
With all these steps, the “wad” of material gets larger and more difficult to manipulate around the sewing machine. The front pieces are 8 feet, body is like 6 feet, and the “mantle cone” was 7 feet. A lot of cloth to bunch, twist, get just right and do hems, attachments, trailing edge restrictions, etc. But only had to do one serious “seam rip” by ways of mistaken orientations!
!Then FINALLY comes the day that we are going to Feliz Navidad, as my friend Billy called it. So the “sea creature” was stuffed in a sack along with a myriad of other nautical themed pieces and we head for the beach!! Well the winds were a wee lite, and by mid afternoon they totally ceased to exist. But not before the maiden flight was made, some improvements and modification was set up, and of course pictures taken.
Folks, I present to you “Squiggy”, the squid. All in all I was quite pleased with this foray into making a “themed” shape windsock, I am encouraged to now pursue some more ‘fishy’ characters!!
